The New BIM Ecosystem: Open and Custom Pipelines

BIM no longer has to mean a single, expensive suite. A growing ecosystem of open standards and open-source tools makes it possible to build custom pipelines tailored to each studio's real needs.

Open pipelines, not closed suites

For years, adopting BIM meant committing to one vendor's full stack. Today, the IFC open standard lets tools exchange rich model data freely, so teams can assemble a workflow from the best pieces instead of a single monolith.

That freedom is the foundation of an open, custom pipeline: data flows between applications without lock-in.

The open-source stack

A capable, license-free toolchain already exists. FreeCAD and Bonsai (formerly BlenderBIM) author native IFC models; Speckle moves and versions data between platforms; and a long tail of libraries automates the rest.

Together they cover authoring, coordination, data exchange and visualization — the core of a modern BIM process.

Custom modules for real problems

The point of an open pipeline is customization. With scripting around IFC, studios can build their own modules — automated structure generation, model checking, quantity extraction — that fit their specific projects and standards.

Instead of adapting the practice to the software, the software is shaped around the practice.
